Feature K-POP band story: Big Bang

In the long listings of k-pop group out there, one boy band caught my full attention which even right now I’m spending most of my time surfing the cyberspace just to know every angle of their popularity. Thanks to my particular friend for influencing me to subscribe on them so that my k-pop inventory has expanded.

This is no other than, Big Bang, a South Korean pop boy band lined-up by G-dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri.

Big Bang

If you remember the music video of 2NE1 in the tune of their hit single entitled “Lollipop”, Big Bang was the boy group who have worked with them making this joint project which later reached the #1 spot on various online charts in 2009.

The group formation was chronicled on the television series Big Bang Documentary, from July to August 2006. The show was also aired online on GomTV and on MTV Korea. For those interested where the Big Bang originated, you can also watch it on Youtube.com. It has 10 exciting episodes, more or less 20 minutes per chapter. There, you will have deeper knowledge on each of them as YG Entertainment gave birth on them in the music industry.

Initially a six-member group, one member, SO-1, got eliminated out during the airing of the show before the official debut. Big Bang made their debut on August 19, 2006 at the Gymnastics Arena in Seoul Olympic Park during the YG Family concert.

A writer from Yahoo! Japan once compared their early materials to that of American Hip-hop artist such as Black-Eyed Peas, stating that their material included “catchy vocals, rap and characters”.

Riding on the success of their mini-albums, the group collected numerous awards towards the end of the year 2007, including “Best Male Group” and “Song of the Year” from 2007 M.NET KM Music Festival. They later received the “Artist of the Year” award from the 17th Seoul Music Awards.

And one thing amazing in this group is that they have made the tickets sold-out in just 10 minutes during their “Big Bang Is Great” concert.

Big Bang received their second “Artist of the Year” award from the 2008 M.NET KM Music Festival Award ceremony. At the end of 2008, it was reported that Big Bang earned a total of 36 billion won (USD $24.5 million).

By the end of 2009, Big Bang became the most searched artist in Korea. They also became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for “Best New Comer” and the first from Korea to receive the Japan record award. In recent years, the members have branched out to do solo activities. Taeyang and G-Dragon have released solo materials while T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have started acting.

For several days in January 2010, Big Bang performed their 2010 “Big Bang Concert Big Show” in the Seoul Olympic stadium. The following month, they embarked on their Electric Love tour in Japan. The group returned in February with the release of “Lollipop Pt.2”, the follow up to their single, “Lollipop” with 2NE1. The song was used to coincide with promotions for LG Cyon’s Lollipop phone and also reached number one in digital charts.

Following on, they received the “Best 5 New Artist” award from the 24th Japan Gold Disc Award.

Sort of excited on their visitation here in the Philippines for a concert tour? Ooops… just calm down, as far as I know, for this year 2012 plan, they will invade Manila.
So see you soon at the concert ground.

Now playing…
“A Fool’s Only Tears.mp3” (I definitely enjoy this song even if I’m replaying it a hundred times.)
